R. Christopher DeBoer MA LPC NCC
Chris DeBoer is the founder and clinical director of Red Cedar Relationship Counseling. He originally entered the field of counseling with an idea to specialize on individual counseling with children and adolescents. As Chris asked clients why they came in, nearly every person (younger or older) would talk about how their stress, misery or anxiety was impacting the relationships in their life. Anxiety, depression, anger problems, stage of life crises all have an impact on our relationships (and vice versa). Chris realized that widening his focus to include clients' relationships - whether romantic, friendships or family - was a way to help them reach lasting satisfaction and healing.
Chris believes that people will always understand their own lives better than he could hope to, and have an inherent understanding of what they need to improve or heal. His focus is on working with clients to recognize those solutions and develop that underlying capacity to grow and thrive. Solutions that clients discover for themselves are more likely to stick with them after therapy ends.
Chris has a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and Political Science from Central Michigan University and earned his Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Eastern Michigan University. Chris has an additional three years of training at the Gestalt Counseling and Training Institute of Ann Arbor, and has completed training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness based approaches. Chris lives in the area with his wife (Emily), two cats (Yarr and Prince), and his rescued German Shepherd (Bailey).
